- -=> Quoting Matt Fox to All <=-
-
- MF> man im gunna go to work in a few hours in a disgrunted at the internet
- MF> mood today.. how Totally Rad..
-
- Chill out Matt <g>
-
- MF> yeah everyone says us robotics wont
- MF> fix bugs bla bla... but.. at least there trying to some extent...
-
- This is true...
-
- MF> what about rockwell???
-
- But Rockwell isn't the thread! Don't get confused between Rockwell
- and cheeep imitation clones (which mostly arn't supported) These
- _do_ give the bugs that you mention:
-
- MF> but what about rockwell?? we scream and bitch and they still make RPI
- MF> modems...
-
- So does USR with its Sportster Si. And what about the WinModem?
-
- MF> they still have v.42 bugs in thier 14.4k datapumps,
-
- Huh? If you mean that earlier ROMs defaulted to offering extended V42
- commands which un-updated USRs barfed at? That's the only one I can
- recall
-
- MF> still have bugs from what i hear in the v.34 chips [3429 rate] that
- MF> every modem manufacturer who makes modems based on the rockwell design
- MF> has to put a workaround in the code..
-
- There's no "work around", Matt. All Rockwell-based serious modems
- out there (Boca, Cardinal, Supra, Zoom, there may be others) have
- updated their ROM or Flash code to fully support 3429 symbol rate.
-
- MF> I mean look at all those people
- MF> who bought v.fc modems? they all had to spend somewhere between 0-100
- MF> dollars to buy a whole new modem.. not to mention not having a modem to
- MF> use for up to 2 weeks at a time.
-
- Huh? Can't comment on others but the Zoom V.FC to V34 upgrade is still
- available. And no, you don't have to have your system down to upgrade.
- Just send in your CC details and back comes a V34. Then send in your
- old V.FC. There are Zoom's forms with prices here:
-
- SYSUP.TXT [10] Current SysOp deal for upgrading VFC 24k and 28k8 modems
- to V34 (includes modems bought under original SysOp
- program before international orders were cancelled)
- UPGRADE.TXT [08] V34 upgrade program for V.FC internal and external 24k
- and 28k8 series. Full details and application forms
- (see SYSUP.TXT for Nodelisted SysOps)
-
- MF> based modems are the only modems not designed on buggy/flawed rockwell
- MF> chips in the price range.
-
- Oh dear!
-
- MF> you cant turn your head without noticing that everytime you look
- MF> behind you rockwell is skimping modems down and more.. first they take
- MF> out the error correction,
-
- Rot. The latest Rockwell chipset offering has both hardware and RPI+
- in it. Fact remains that with RPI+ the comport has a lot less work to
- do than with hardware EC/DC based modems...
-
- MF> have no controller whatsoever.. forcing the computer to do everything..
- MF> earlier i had 10 or so windows running with cpu usage 100%.. with ftp,
- MF> news, and all that stuff.. i dont think i have any room left to handle
- MF> the error correction or the data pump in software after all that..
-
- The datapump isn't in software under either RPI or RPI+ And anyway, how
- do you know you couldn't run another background task? The driver takes
- typically only 40k of mem... Ten windows open? Whatever were you up
- to?
-
- MF> what can they possibly do next to lower the overal quality on modems?
- MF> HMMMM????
-
- Perhaps your bile could be directed at those that buy a modem solely
- on price? If so, you'll have to forgive the modem makers for supplying
- what the market demands
-
- MF> and all you guys do is yell at usr..
-
- But back to the V42bis thingie...
- You've just got thru rubbishing Rockwell effectively saying it's all their
- fault. Then, just a few postings later, give this advice:

- In article <4i8m6h$ie3@mirv.unsw.edu.au>, s2154364@cse.unsw.edu.au says...

- just disable v42 and use mnp instead as a work around until usr

-
- Just wondering whether the two Mat Foxs are, by any chance, related?
